Abstract
Composite materials shafts have been showing promising results when applied to rotating machines due to its low weight/strength ratio and good fatigue resistance. Despite the advantages in comparison to more traditional materials, composites present different types of damage that are hard to detect and can lead to abrupt collapse. Therefore, it is necessary to use monitoring techniques to detect incipient faults and prevent failure. This work evaluates the application of the structural health monitoring approach based on the electromechanical impedance method (ISHM technique) on a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) shaft of a horizontal rotor supported by ball bearings. Two sets of four PZT patches were attached to the shaft on different positions and the fault condition was simulated by the addition of a small mass to the shaft. The effects of the rotor’s rotation speed, position of the fault, and temperature variation were evaluated to increase the method robustness.
