Abstract
This work presents the methodology used for the development of a water filtration system for the test tank of the Naval and Ocean Engineering Laboratory of the Technological Research Institute (IPT). For the filtration system, it was decided to modify a commercial filter cartridge in a sand filter. For the correct sizing of the operational flow, we studied in detail the flow theory in porous media, determining the loss of load in the sand filter by three methods: semi-empirical formulation using the Ergun equation; experimental, by means of tests carried out in the IPT Flow Laboratory; numerical simulations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The results allowed to compare the coefficients of inertial (α) and viscose (β) permeability, as well as the inertial resistance Pi and the viscous resistance Pv obtained by the three methods. By adopting the experimental results as a reference, it was possible to validate the semi-empirical equation and obtain the input data for the CFD simulations. The analysis of the flow lines generated by the numerical simulations allowed a better understanding of the hydrodynamic behavior of the flow in the porous medium and the influence of the radial flow on the variation of the filter layer.
