Abstract
One of the main goals of modern Civil Engineering is achieving the most effective structural systems, while reducing material consumption. Over the last few decades, this concept has led for increased slenderness of structural designs, which may cause problems, such as excessive vibration or buckling of beams and columns. It is known that, on conventional structural projects, engineers focus their concern on static stability, designing buildings to safely support the worst possible static loading cases, what does not necessarily guarantee safety or good performance, in case there is any dynamic solicitation to the structure. This paper presents a tool of simple usage for the dynamic analysis of reticulated structural models, entirely implemented in Matlab® for the LESM (Linear Elements Structure Model) program, an open source structural analysis software with an educational approach and an interactive graphical interface for modeling. The eigenvalue problem of an undamped oscillation system is solved with a Matlab built-in function to find the requested vibration modes. The structural response, considering a damped system, to dynamic loading and initial conditions is obtained by either a numerical solver, using Newmark’s method, or an analytical solution of the uncoupled modal system of differential equations of motion.
