Abstract
Breast cancer is a leading cause of women’s death in the world, being the second type of cancer that affect more women in Brazil. Early detection of breast cancer is essential for reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with this disease. The main objective of this work is to apply the electromechanical impedance method to the detection of a 10 mm inclusion in a breast model and study the influence of some parameters in the detection. So, that it can be used as an alternative to existing techniques for the detection of breast tumors. The experimental procedure uses a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) as sensor and actuator attached to the surface of the monitored structure. Due to the electromechanical coupling between the sensors and the structure, the presence of the inclusion in the structure changes the impedance signal. In addition to the detection verification, the position of the inclusion in three different depths and the influence of the internal heat inside the inclusion were evaluated. It was concluded that the inclusion of 10 mm, with internal heating or not, was successfully detected by the PZT transducers positioned in the different quadrants of the model. Furthermore, it was observed that the variation in the depth of the inclusion and the internal heating did not induce significant influences in the detection in the tested conditions.
