Abstract
The temperature regulation is a classical problem in control area, being one of the first applications of automatic control. In this paper three state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms, Genetic Algorithm with Multi-Parent Crossover (GA-MPC), Weighted Differential Evolution (WDE) and Competition over Resources (COR) were applied to solve the controller tuning problem associated with two thermal systems, an electrical heater and a heat exchanger. In both cases, the main objective is the temperature regulation. The minimization of the objective function associate with controllers’ gains was composed by two other functions, the first one assumed the absolute error between the reference temperature and the systems output, and the second one the control signal variation. The performance analysis of the proposed controllers was achieved comparing the results with a direct tuning method. The PID controllers obtained through the COR evolutionary algorithms presented a better performance when compared with the direct method, while GA-MPC and WDE are not able to improve the thermal system performance on both models.
