Abstract
Landing gear is one of the dominant aircrafts drag components at approach. So, continued research efforts to reduce landing gear drag are essential. This paper describes further development of a nose landing gear and presents results obtained from the wind tunnel testing of a simplified small-scale model nose landing gear. An Airbus A320 aircraft’s typical configuration was selected as reference. A nose landing gear completely modeled using CATIA V5 and a 1/6 scaled landing gear model was used. The emphasis in this experiment was based on pressure distribution and velocity profiles on and behind the bluff body. Also, the aerodynamic drag coefficient has been evaluated in this work. Documented measures from other wind-tunnels have been taken for comparisons and verification of the experiment with the computational analysis of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), through which there was an attempt to quantify the accuracy of our models, methods and assumptions. To that end, several results containing both time-averaged, always side by side with corresponding experimental values, are reported.
