Abstract
This work aims to investigate the mechanical properties of natural intralaminar hybrid composites with epoxy and polyester matrices. Two different types of natural hybrid composites were produced via hand layup technique (jute + curauá and jute + sisal) with a modified twill weaved mat of jute and the other fibers as reinforcement. A simple wave jute composite was also produced. Tensile and flexural tests were performed according to ASTM 638 and 790 standards. An analysis of the specimens’ fracture surface with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was done to compare the mechanisms of fracture related to each type of matrix. The studied hybrid composites presented better results than the pure jute composite. In addition, the epoxy-based matrix composites presented better results in tensile load while the polyester composites are more indicated to flexural load conditions.
