Abstract
The present work is aimed at evaluating the fluid-dynamic performance of the condensing unit of a vapor cycle system (VCS) for air conditioning application in small aircrafts. For doing so, the system airflow impedances as well as the characteristic curves of the fan were all obtained by means of an open-loop wind-tunnel facility. In addition, the condensing unit components (i.e., ducts, grills, and the condenser itself) have been tested to map their individual contributions to the total system impedance. Furthermore, simulations of the air flows using a commercial CFD package together with an algebraic tailormade model were performed, validated and employed to redesign the air flow system while considering both operating and geometric constraints. Simulations and experimental results have shown that the use of an alternative fan together with slight modifications in a particular check-valve led to noise and weight reduction while suppling the required amount of air flow rate not only to the tube-fin condenser but also through the fresh air line.
