Abstract
In the present study, a multi-objective Bayesian optimization algorithm is proposed, suitable for finding an approximation to the Pareto Front of objective functions with relatively few selected observations, allowing it to be applied to expensive black-box objectives. A set of benchmark functions (the Zitzler-Deb-Thiele functions – ZDT – 1, 2 and 3) with topologically different Pareto Fronts were optimized to verify the performance of the method, and good approximations to the true Pareto fronts were obtained with less than a hundred evaluations of the objectives. A thermal-hydraulic optimization of plate heat exchanger was investigated. Maximization of thermal efficiency and minimization of pressure drop to hot fluid were considered simultaneously as objective functions during multi-objective optimization. The proposed algorithm was applied to obtain a Pareto front approximation for these conflicting objectives. Four geometric design variables which include length and width of the plate heat exchanger, the thickness of metal plates and area enlargement factor of plates were investigated.
