Abstract
The aluminothermic reaction between hematite and aluminum is one common thermite reaction, which produces a great amount of heat in a self-propagation behavior. These properties have allowed thermite to be applied in the welding process, material synthesis, well abandonment and some pyrotechnic technologies. However, it is not a simple condensed-phase reaction because of all the complex physicochemical mechanisms involved. In this point of view, the present study aims to develop a numerical analysis of the Fe2O3/Al reaction process, considering some assumptions such as constant kinetic rate, although phase changes and temperature dependence of thermochemical properties have been included in the study. A finite-difference scheme was applied to solve the mass and energy equations. The velocity of the front propagation was fitted to experimental results from literature, while the maximum temperature was compared to these experimental results and have achieved a good agreement.
