Abstract
Researchers are always in search of inspiration for solving simple and complex problems, and in many cases, the nature of the answer these questions. Therefore, the present work was based on the wisdom of nature, specifically on the movement of fish, to develop a converter capable of transforming the flow of ocean currents into electricity. This converter is called Oscillating Hydrofoil, it is a device designed in several configurations, such as one or two wings; in the horizontal or vertical position. The purpose of this work is to develop a mathematical model compatible with a flapping foil with a flat rigid wing. This model, whose heave and pitch movements are coupled, generating only one-degree-offreedom. Moreover, two types of movements (sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal) were used to compare the efficiency of the device under these conditions. Besides, the dynamics were obtained through Lagrange and in the equation of motion, hydrodynamic forces were considered as external forces. The proposed mathematical model got satisfactory behavior and the non-sinusoidal movement, with β = 4, presented an efficiency six percent higher than the other cases. In future works, to align the control with the result obtained here.
