Abstract
The work studies the influence of a desiccant wheel on a laboratory drying testbench, designed to study food drying curves, in which it is compared the thermodynamic air properties of both systems - with and without desiccant dehumidifier. The experimental drying bench is a sheet-metal duct equipped with: a fan, a set of electric resistances to heat air, an mechanical flow controller, anemometers, dry air temperature and relative humidity sensors; a semi analytical scale and dataloggers, built to allow the instantaneous monitoring of the variables: sample weight, air velocity, dry bulb temperature and relative humidity of the air. The drying operation is compared with a bench without desiccant wheel, in order to analyze drying curve, drying rate, outlet temperature and humidity. Results show output parameters of forced convection on both systems, with process outlet air of desiccant system drier than system without wheel. The curves show a faster drying, up to 65% approximately, from the testbench with desiccant than the first configuration, with lower temperature and absolute humidity.
