Abstract
This work studies a new type of electric energy storage system named ORES (Organic Rankine Energy Storage), as an alternative to CAES (Compressed Air Energy Storage) and LAES (Liquid Air Energy Storage). Initially the exergy density potential of a set of six working fluids was evaluated for a range of storage pressures. Then the ORES system was evaluated based on a thermodynamic analysis considering steady-state operation of the system for a range of pressures and superheating degrees at the turbine inlet for the two fluids with higher exergy density. The evaluated organic fluids presented an exergy density of up to 20 Wh/L, which is higher than that for CAES, which had a maximum exergy density of 6 Wh/L, specially for lower storage pressures, but still much lower than that for LAES, approximately 180 Wh/L. The ORES system resulted in high round-trip efficiencies (because of the nature of the system the round-trip efficiency is higher than 100%), but with low first and second law efficiencies, approximately 10% and 40% respectively.
