Abstract
A study on resolved-scale turbulence-radiation interaction (TRI) effects on a square-shaped, large-scale ethanol pool fire is reported, based on transient data generated from fully-coupled, high-resolution large eddy simulation (LES). Time-averaged values of the radiative emission, absorption and net heat loss are compared to results obtained from an independent radiative transfer solution initialized from mean fields of temperature and species concentration. The participating medium for the radiative transfer calculations is treated as a non-gray gaseous mixture. TRI is found to increase the regions of emission and absorption, but, because the increase in the former is more pronounced, the overall radiation loss is enhanced by turbulent fluctuations. Deviations due to TRI in the domain-integrated emission and absorption and in the radiant fraction of the flame are between 68% and 75%. The correlations arising in the time-averaged emission term are studied by defining some correlation coefficients and plotting their contours in the domain. The results indicate that the temperature autocorrelation has the most important contribution for the overall TRI, tending to increase the mean emission, but the cross-correlation between the temperature and the absorption coefficient also needs to be taken into account.
