J-INTEGRAL EVALUATION OF POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE

Abstract
This article has the goal to study the fracture toughness of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). During a tension test, four double ended notched specimen were evaluated in mode I stress, the load in quasi-static condition at constant temperature. Full-field displacements were attained using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. A homemade program was developed to calculate the J-integral from displacement fields in three different paths of a region near the crack for each specimen. This procedure was performed to verify the path independency. Moreover, a comparison between the results obtained using J-integral and the classical strain energy release rate in the elastic region was also carried out. The agreement between both approaches is good.
