Abstract
The Spiral Notch Torsion Test method, SNTT, allows the determination of fracture toughness in the plane stress state, KIC, by means of pure torsion applied to a cylindrical specimen, fatigue pre-cracked with a sharp crack tip with pitch angle of 45. The objective of this work was to evaluate the uncertainty associated with KIC evaluation by means of analytical models and the use of SNTT test. For this purpose, the Monte Carlo method was applied, considering an Inconel 718 test specimen. It was concluded that the input variable crack length was the factor that most contributed to the final uncertainty, about 0.58 %. The uncertainty values associated with fracture toughness, when estimated by the equations of this test, were low, representing 1.1 %. At the end, this work has estimated the uncertainty associated with the fracture toughness evaluation using the SNTT method, allowing the adequacy of the fracture toughness measurement to the ISO/IEC 17025 and thus contribute to the improvement of the necessary scientific rigour in research and consequently in publications, enabling the obtainment of traceable results.
