An Efficient Formulation For Coupled Geomechanics Simulations In Nonpay-Pay Regions

Abstract
This work proposes an efficient formulation for reservoir simulation: to solve the mass conservation equation only in the permeable regions of the domain, employing a single computational grid. Traditionally, the mass conservation equation is solved needlessly in the whole domain, even in its impermeable parts. The latter leans towards inefficiency, specially because the impermeable regions are usually bigger than the permeable ones. Also, this problem may become worse in multiphase flow situations, where nonlinearities arise from the mass conservation equation. It is expected that: the proposed approach will be significantly faster than the traditional one; the speed up will grow as finer grids are employed.
