Abstract
A finite element model for low velocity impact damage of composite laminated plates subjected to compressive preload is presented using ABAQUS FE code. Intralaminar damage is evaluated in each ply using a progressive failure model based on Continuum Damage Mechanics approach for fibre-reinforced composites while the interlaminar damage is evaluated using cohesive elements placed at the laminate's mid plane. Impact simulations were carried out at different preload stress levels, ranging from unloaded until a post-buckled regime. The total cohesive zone damaged area and total dissipated energy during impact was correlated to the incident impact energy and preload stress level.
