Abstract
Since the introduction of the wheelchair race, in the Paralympics, there have been extraordinary improvements in the structure of wheelchairs that have given gain to the race time. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the mechanical resistance of a new structural profile that can be applied in a race wheelchair. Two computational models were designed by finite element method (FEM). In one model, commercial structural profiles were used, while in another model a new profile was used that is already found in some sports wheelchairs. The results of the analyzes by FEM showed that the new structural profile is superior in mechanical resistance and presents a lower weight. Thus, the new structural profile can replace the traditional profiles, since it allows gain of performance in the sport, due to the decrease of weight of the race wheelchair.
