Abstract
Quasi-static and impact tests on carbon fiber – epoxy tubes ware carried out in order to reveal the effect of the loading parameters- striking mass and impact velocity- on their deformation mechanisms. The crushing behavior and energy absorption capacity of circular CF/Epoxy tubes were investigated. Tubes with two different stacking sequences were used in the quasi-static and impact tests and the effects of fiber orientation and loading rates on the crushing modes and SEA (Specific Energy Absorption) of the tubes were explored, with the results being compared and discussed. The experimental results show that the crushing modes of tubes under quasi-static and dynamic crushing are stacking sequence dependent which lead to a difference in their energy absorption capacity. The influence of the shape of chamfer, which was used as a crushing trigger, on the peak load was also analyzed.
