Abstract
In this work, we study and develop a technique for monitoring and detecting the structural integrity of a metal beam using coupled piezoelectric actuators (PZT) and accelerometers as sensors. The technique consists in the use of Lamb waves, observing the propagation of mechanical waves in solid medium. Lamb waves are formed when the PZT actuator receives a pulse and turns it into mechanical excitation along the structure (beam), and is finally detected by the accelerometer. In this study, the whole structure was first tested and then a localized damage was applied. The reading of the data collected in a structure presents parameters different from those collected in a structure with faults, so the damages are identified by comparing the received signals. The verification of the results of the two readings is through the evaluation methodology called Damage Index (ID).
