Weight Reduction of The Pickup Cargo Bed by Replacing Metal Panels with Polymer Composite Materials

Abstract
Seeking to take advantage of the benefits of polymeric composite materials, some automakers applied composites to the cargo beds of their pickups trucks, replacing traditional metallic structures. When applied to this region of the vehicle, the composites allow the reduction of parts by integration of functions and, due to the large size of the cargo beds, can promote high weight reduction. After a benchmarking procedure, it was observed that the complete replacement of metal panels generated the most efficient weight reduction. In this work, the feasibility of complete replacement of metal panels with polymer composite panels was analyzed through benchmarking procedure, modeling and finite element analysis (FEM).
