Abstract
Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulation is used for analyzing the applicability of active control techniques on improving crosswind stability of trains. The analysis is made for an idealized 1:25 high-speed train model for a Reynolds number of 3.7 x 105, based on the model height. The analysis is based on both momentum injection and suction techniques, the control velocity is set to 1% of the free-stream velocity. The analysis is made for different control locations where it is found that the control applied at the lee-side roof corner renders better results, reducing the lee-rail moment coefficient, mainly responsible for vehicle overturning in critical crosswind conditions.
