Abstract
This work presents the development of Langevin piezoelectric transducers and its application in acoustic levitation of small particles. The transducers consist of two piezoelectric rings sandwiched between aluminum masses by a central bolt. The dynamic behavior of each transducer was simulated by using the Finite Element Method and the transducers were designed to resonate at a frequency of 23 kHz. The Finite Element Method was also applied to simulate the potential of the acoustic radiation force that acts on small particles in a standing wave field. Two transducers were fabricated to experimentally validate the simulation results. The designed and experimental resonance frequencies had relative error smaller than 3%. In addition, the transducers were used to acoustically levitate small expanded polystyrene particles in air.
