Abstract
Determining thermal properties of materials is extremely important to enable higher efficiency in industrial processes. Some processes have to prevent heat losses, for that, thermal insulating materials are used. It is necessary to know the thermal conductivity, an important thermal property, to determine the quality of a material as an insulator. For that, on this work, the guarded hot plate (GHP) method is used, which is the standard technique for measuring thermal conductivity of solid materials in the range from 0.01 to 2 W/m.K. It consists of placing two identical samples of a material in contact with a cold plate and a hot plate, allowing a temperature gradient to appear. By measuring the power supplied to the hot plate and the average temperature gradient, the thermal conductivity is calculated by Fourier’s law. Even though Fourier’s law is a simple equation, the apparatus of the GHP is complex. This work aims to improve the GHP method developed in the Heat Transfer Laboratory at the Federal University of Itajubá using a new cold plate and minimizing errors.
