Abstract
Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging is a medical modality that uses a focused ultrasound transducer to generate acoustic radiation force in soft tissues. This is a very promising method because it enables to quantitatively assess mechanical properties of soft tissues. The aim of this work is to design a 2D ultrasound transducer array for ARFI excitation with high efficiency. We proposed a transducer array configuration that is capable of reducing: 1) the number of channels of the ultrasound system; and 2) the large electrical impedance mismatch between the transducer and the voltage source circuitry. The performance of the fabricated transducer was compared to a typical transducer and the results showed a high power transfer efficiency, broad bandwidth and minimum insertion loss, determining optimum parameters for the design of 2D ultrasound transducer arrays used in ARFI imaging.
