Abstract
The aim of this article is to investigate the effects of a small engine-generator group operating on dieselethanol by fumigation method. The experiments were conducted in a single-cylinder diesel engine coupled to a generator. Ethanol was atomized at the engine intake manifold by a port fuel injector. The diesel oil substitution rates were 12.8% to 70% in energy. The experiments resulted in a decrease in the opacity and a reduction up to 18% in temperature of the engine exhaust gases. On the other hand, an increase in specific fuel consumption and up to 5.5% in genset thermal efficiency have been noted. The results were satisfactory, showing that ethanol can be used as an alternative fuel for diesel engines.
