Abstract
The use of experimental methods is fundamental for the automobile industry, as it allows one to analyze aerodynamic phenomena that are crucial for the development of automobiles. Since the second half of the XIX century, engineering studies have been conducted in hydrodynamic tunnels, considering that this instrument makes easier the visualization of automotive aerodynamics phenomena, not requiring complex maintenance. Additionally, the use of Ahmed bodies is coherent, considering that this reference model has been extensively used in studies that aim to analyze the flow of land vehicles, whilst generating several satisfactory results. Accordingly, a study using the Ahmed body can be conducted to achieve performance improvements and other factors related to the automotive industry by determining which configurations result in reduced drag from a clear visualization of the flow. This work consists of using a horizontal hydrodynamic tunnel, the dye injection method and Ahmed bodies arranged in series with different rear inclination angles (10°, 25°, 30° and 35°). In this arrangement, the first Ahmed body forms a turbulent wake that impacts the second body. So during the study, these impacts will be analyzed, and the Ahmed bodies will have their shape and position modified to reduce the generated drag. The experimental methodology also used a camera to capture all phenomena relevant to this field. Up to this point, the above technique has been successfully applied to isolated Ahmed bodies as a supplement to this work and produced coherent results compared to the literature. For the final study, we will use the same technique to Ahmed bodies in tandem (simulating a truck convoy) with the proposal to develop an experimental methodology to visualize the flow in hydrodynamic tunnels. Finally, considering studies in this field, it is expected that the variation of the rear inclination angle and the distance between the models will lead to a significant change in the recirculation zone behind the leading body.
