Abstract
The use of biogas can provide significant savings in waste management due to its high energy potential. It shows the importance of outlining alternatives that enable the use of biogas in Brazilian territory. Therefore, to map improvements in biogas use, a Life Cycle Assessment of biogas from cattle manure was carried out on a Brazilian farm with activities focused on dairy cattle. In this study, there was a combination of primary and secondary to model the biogas production, with a functional unit of 1 Nm3 of compressed biogas ready for electricity purposes or the use as biomethane. The plant is supplied with 3160 kg of manure from a herd of 93 cattle, producing 186 Nm3 of biogas. The processes of manure production, management, pre-treatment, anaerobic digestion, biogas cleaning, and compression were considered. Thus, the Life Cycle Inventory Analysis (LCIA) results were 0.281 kg of CO2 Eq. for the Global Warming Potential impact category, 6.21E-4 kg of SO2 Eq. for Acidification Potential, and 8.23E-5 kg of Phosphate Eq. for Eutrophication Potential. The processes of electricity supply and anaerobic digestion of manure strongly influenced LCIA, indicating the need for alternatives for mitigating the impacts of such operations.
