Abstract
The use of solid desiccant has played an important role in air conditioning systems with the purpose of dehumidifying atmospheric air based on its energy efficiency. This paper is to investigate numerically heat and mass transfer on solid desiccants using silica gel. A mathematical formulation is developed followed by a dimensional analysis to determine the dimensionless groups relevant to the considered problem. Whereby, a formulation is carried out respecting the conservation laws, considering a one-dimensional model for transient heat and mass transfer in a homogeneous porous medium, and the dimensionless parameters adopted. To illustrate the effect of dimensionless groups and obtain a qualitative validation of the proposed model, the equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method for spatial discretization, with second-order centered differences approximations, and the Method of Lines for time solution, both through a computational tool known as Mathematica. The methodology is verified by numerical integral balances of mass and energy and by analyzing the order of the method, calculated from numerical data obtained for different meshes. This research is expected to help understand how silica gel helps in the process of dehumidifying through the process of heat and mass transfer.
