Abstract

Bipropellant propulsion systems are used in rockets for placing payloads into orbit and for positioning, correction or change of the orbit of satellites or spacecrafts and space vehicles. In recent decades, there has been a great interest in the use of high-performance, low-environmental-impact space propellants. In addition, new gelled propellants have been tested allowing better performance and safer operation. Injectors are used for atomizing and distributing propellants in the combustion chamber of a thruster. The atomization process aims to increase the surface area of the propellants, to increase the rates of vaporization, mixing and burning. There are numerous types of injectors that are employed according to various criteria such as operational range, availability, atomization efficiency, stability and application history. Pintle-type injectors allow for control of the injection area, enabling precise control of propellant flows, providing a good distribution of propellants within the combustion chamber and presenting few instability problems. This work describes the initial studies carried out aiming at the development of a pintle injector for atomization of gelled ethanol and hydrogen peroxide, both in different concentrations. Simulations were performed with the CEA NASA software to obtain the performance curves of the propellant combination, considering different pressures (10 to 80 bar) and various equivalence ratios (0.4 to 2.5). Several configurations of pintle injectors were evaluated, including continuous slot or slot, multi-slot and multi-hole injectors. The preliminary design of a pintle injector for atomization of gelled ethanol and hydrogen peroxide was performed, considering a propellant with a thrust of 100 N.
