Abstract
When a partially filled reservoir is submitted to external exciting forces, the phenomenon known as wave sloshing may occur, causing large wave impacts at its walls. The loads produced by the wave motion have the potential to cause structural damage and/or affect the vessels stability. Sloshing waves are associated with a wide range of engineering problems, including the motions of liquid fuel in aircraft, fluids that are transported in containers, and oil movement inside FPSO cargo tanks. This paper aims to model numerically the generation and propagation of free surface waves in walled containers. Continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are solved via a finite volume method with a homogeneous multiphase condition for 2D and 3D geometries. A good agreement is found when comparing the numerical results with analytical solutions and experiments. Changes in the design of the reservoir are suggested, reducing the pressure peaks at its wall.
