Abstract
Recently large fuel storage tanks in Santos Port accidentally catched fire, resulting in a huge smoke dispersion and heat transfer that forced many people leave their residences and caused many healthy problems. Considering this kind of accident, smoke dispersion caused by different wind velocities is experimentally modelled in the present work. This article presents an experimental analysis of the smoke column dispersion and flame tilt in a lab-scale diesel pool fire, using a wind tunnel to provide the necessary cross-flow condition to simulate the wind behavior. The influence of different wind velocities over the tilt of the flame was analyzed, as well as other issues concerning pool fire structure, turbulence and stability. Experimental analyses are performed for future validation of a numerical simulation of the same pool fire and wind tunnel using the software FDS. Preliminary results indicate that smoke dispersion is enhanced as the cross-flow velocity is increased. The same behavior is reached for flame tilt. Both results are in agreement with literature data and empirical correlations.
