Abstract
The use of air conditioning in large commercial buildings represents a considerable portion of electricity consumption in many countries. This demand, especially in warmer countries, may increase more than triple by 2050, regarding economic and demographic growth. The widespread increase of refrigeration demands is also deeply related to climate change into a vicious cycle. At the same time, the growing awareness worldwide about reducing the environmental impact of energy systems, is leading to increasing demand for more efficient and eco-friendlier equipment. This work employs the SPECO method to perform an exergoeconomic analysis of a chilled water system in a shopping mall located in the city of João Pessoa - PB, Brazil. The analysis aims to identify improvement points of energy efficiency in the system from an exergoeconomic point of view, taking into consideration all the costs involved in the productive process. Through the results of this analysis, it is expected to quantify the exergy streams and the irreversibility of each equipment. Then, the calculated exergoeconomic parameters will serve as a diagnostic tool to determine the priority order of components which need optimization and to indicate the alterations that must be made. These results will lead to energy efficiency improvements, thus reducing the energy consumption of the system under analysis.
