Abstract
Reciprocating compressors are widely used in small capacity refrigeration systems due to its efficiency, reliability and low cost. A number of factors can significantly reduce the mass flow rate supplied by the compressor to the system, thus reducing the cooling capacity. This paper presents a procedure to identify and quantify different sources of volumetric inefficiency, such as suction gas superheating, clearance volume, backflow in the suction and discharge valves, and leakage through the piston-cylinder clearance. The procedure is applied in the analysis of a reciprocating compressor operating under two rotation speeds.
