Flame Image Analysis for Biomass Pellets Combustion: Assessment Based on Morphology Visualization

Abstract
In this paper, we aim to evaluate flame morphology in a small burner of bio-fuel pellets collecting visual data from a cellphone camera, and comparing to data from a thermocouple and load cell. Different color modes were tested as means of pre-processing, and a thresholding technique was applied to videos taken from an experiment with the burner on a frame-by-frame basis. On our work, HSV color mode stood out as most useful way of pre-processing, the low frames per second camera was able to capture some behavior on the flame’s morphology, although not smoothly. Plotting of flame height and frontal area showed a valley coinciding to a quick increase in flames brightness and size. The peak in temperature was delayed in regards to peaks in height and frontal area of the flame and plotting of accumulated frontal area showed change in slope coinciding to points of quick increase in brightness and fuel burnout
