Abstract
This work analyzes the performance effects of a diesel generator set operating with a mixture of B7 (7% biodiesel in mineral diesel) and hydrogen gas (99.98% purity) injected into the engine intake air. Hydrogen was injected continuously at various mass concentrations (6, 8 and 10%). The results of the tests showed a reduction in the specific fuel consumption as a function of the increase in the hydrogen mass fraction, in the same way the CO2 and O emissions decreased proportionally as the hydrogen concentration was increased. On the other hand, the levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) increased due to the increase of the average temperature inside the cylinder. In addition, the numerical results using the AVL-BOOST program showed that there was an increase in the peaks of the maximum pressure and the rate of heat release inside the cylinder as a function of the increase of hydrogen addition. It was also identified that there was reduction of the volumetric efficiency as the percentage of hydrogen concentration increased.
