Abstract
The present study aims to study the influence of moisture and particle size on the combustion of sewage sludge to verify if its oxidation can be used as a form of treatment for biomass. For this, experiments were carried out in a fixed bed reactor with samples with controlled parameters. The biomass characterization will be performed through proximate analysis, following the ASTM D1762-84 standard. For the control of the particle size sieves with four different meshes are used, 12.50, 5.60, 4.00 and 1.7 mm. For the moisture control, the samples are dried in the muffle with two different durations, 1h and 2h. With the results of the proximate analysis will be obtained values of moisture content, volatile matter, ash and fixed carbon. With the characteristic temperature profile it is possible to perceive the instant when the moisture vaporization of the biomass occurs and then, with the release of moisture, the rapid increase of the temperature reaching the maximum value. This rapid increase occurs due to devolatilization and the combustion of the fixed carbon, leaving the ashes therefrom. The loss of heat from the exhaust gases causes the decrease of the temperature.
