Abstract
Micro hydro generation produces low environmental and social impacts during construction and operation and are you consider the most cost-effective way to generate electricity in remote areas. The Archimedes turbine is a system for micro hydro generation, and its main advantages are: operate at low drop heights and be a fish-friendly technology. In this work, the OpenFOAM software is used to numerically simulate the flow in a Archimedes turbine. The numerically calculated mechanical power is corrected by a factor accounting for the leakage in the gaps between the screw and the trough. The main advantage of analytically calculating the gap leakage losses is to reduce the refinement needed to simulate the Archimedes screw. The efficiencies calculated in the present work were close to experimental and numerical results in the literature. Mechanical efficiencies close to 80 % were obtained for the Archimedes turbine working in a flow range of +- 20 % of nominal. Lower efficiencies were calculated for larger screw angles of inclination.
