The Use of Experimental Data in the Prediction of a Slug Flow Pattern for CFD Simulations

Abstract
This paper proposes a method for the minimization of the computational cost spent during the development of a slug flow pattern in CFD simulations. The method is based on setting a prediction of the flow variables, e.g. phases’ distribution, velocity field, and so forth, in a translational referential moving with the same velocity of the Taylor Bubble, leading to an optimal domain size, that consists of a slug unity. The initial shape of the flow is obtained using experimental data along with mechanistic models. The CFD simulations were carried out in OpenFOAM using RANS equations, and the RNG k-epsilon was used for the turbulence modeling. The results are under obtainment and are going to be compared to other simulations made using a stationary referential without a pattern prediction, to evaluate the benefits of the current methodology. A great improvement is expected.
