 Title:
ALUMINIUM BASE COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH NI3AL INTERMETALLIC BY POWDER METALLURGY: MICROSTRUCTURAL, MECHANICAL AND CORROSION CHARACTERIZATION.

Summary :
ALUMINIUM BASE COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH NI3AL INTERMETALLIC BY POWDER METALLURGY: MICROSTRUCTURAL, MECHANICAL AND CORROSION CHARACTERIZATION. THE METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE, AS WELL AS THE INTERMETALLIC, DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF COMBINING PROPERTIES SUCH AS STRENGTH, LOW DENSITY AND EXCELLENT WEIGTH/RATE, HAS NOWADAYS BEEN ATRACTING THE ATTENTION OF NUMEROUS RESEARCH GROUPS. IN THIS ESSAY, ARE COMPRISED BOTH MATERIAL FAMILIES AND THE POWDER METALLURGY PROCESS IS USED FOR ELABORATION OF ALUMINIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES STRENGTHENED WITH INTERMETALLIC NI3AL. THE REFERRED INTERMETALLIC IS OBTAINED THROUGH TWO POWDER MANUFACTURE ROUTE, OR RATHER, RAPID SOLIDIFICATION AND MECHANICAL BOND, BEING THE LAST PROCESS ALSO UTILIZED FOR THE ELABORATION OF THE BASE ALLOY AA2014, WICH WAS USED AS MATRIX ON THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE CITED MATERIAL COMPOSITES. THE POWDERS OF THESE MATERIAL WERE ANALIZED THROUGH X-RAY DIFFRACTION. THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE REFERRING COMPOSITES OBEYED THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE: MIXTURE OF THE POWDERS ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC PROPORTIONS (AA2014 AND NI3AL), UNIAXIAL COMPACTION, LUBRIFICATION, HOT EXTRUSION, WITHOUT ENCAPSULING AND DEGASIFICATION, AND THERMAL TREATMENT. THE TEMPERATURES USED IN THE CITED THERMAL TREATMENT WERE OPTIMIZED BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY. THE MATERIAL PRODUCED WERE STUDIED MICROSTRUCTURALLY BY MEANS OF CONVENTIONAL OPTICAL AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND CHARACTERIZED ACCORDING TO ITS TENSILE STRENGTH, HARDNESS AND CORROSION RESISTANCE: INTERGRANULAR CORROSION (TEST ASTM G110), EXFOLIATION CORROSION SUSCEPTIBILITY (TEST ASTM G34) AND MEASUREMENT OF CORROSION POTENTIAL (STANDARD AND MODIFIED TEST ASTM G69). KEYWORDS: COMPOSITE, INTERMETALLIC, POWDER METALLURGY, CORROSION.
