 Title:
A METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO INTEGRATING SHIP DESIGN

Summary :
ABSTRACT. THE REPORT PRESENTS AN APPROACH TO SHIP DESIGN BASED ON THE CONFLICT FACED BY THE DESIGNER TO STATE THE PROBLEM STRUCTURE AND ITS SOLUTION SIMULTANEOUSLY, SINCE, FOR CONSISTENCE REASONS, ONE DEPENDS INTRINSICALLY ON THE OTHER. THE APPROACH EMPHASIZES THE THREE MAJOR ASPECTS TO DESIGN METHODOLOGY: THE PROCESS TO PRODUCE A CONCEPT SOLUTION, OBSERVING ITS INNER LIMITATIONS AND POTENTIAL; THE REQUIRED CONTROL AND ACCESS TO ALL DESIGN VARIABLES, PARAMETERS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS IN THE PROBLEM MODELLING; AND THE HANDLING FLEXIBILITY OFFERED BY THE COMPUTATIONAL TOOL TO MODEL PROBLEM/SOLUTION, AND TO ALLOW THE RECOGNITION OF THE SOLUTION SPACE. THE PAPER REPORTS THE EVOLUTION OF A RESEARCH LINE WHICH CONSIDERS THE HULL GEOMETRY AS THE CENTRAL REFERENCE TO THE WHOLE PROCESS, LINKING ALL ASSOCIATED SUB-PROBLEMS AND SUB-SOLUTIONS. A COMPUTATIONAL TOOL HAS BEEN DESIGNED AND IS BEING PROTOTYPED WHICH INCORPORATES THE MAIN ASPECTS OF THE APPROACH, WITH SPECIAL CONCERN TO THE DESIGNERS CONTROL OF THE ENTIRE PROCESS, OFFERING MEANS TO PERCEIVE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VARIABLES AND DESIGN PARAMETERS, AS WELL AS THE HIERARCHY INVOLVING PROBLEMS AND TRIGGERED PROCESSES. KEYWORDS: ENGINEERING DESIGN METHODOLOGY, SHIP DESIGN.
