NUMERIC MODEL TO SIMULATE A CRYOGENIC PROBE

Summary :
0NUMERIC MODEL TO SIMULATE A CRYOGENIC PROBE ABSTRACT. A ONE-DIMENSIONAL NUMERIC MODEL IS PROPOSED TO SIMULATE THE OPERATION OF A CRYOGENIC PROBE ON TEMPERATURES -79 OC (DRY ICE) AND -196 OC (LIQUID NITROGEN). THE MODEL IS BASED ON IMPLICIT FINITE DIFFERENCE APPROACH METHOD AND WAS USED TO CALCULATE THE EXTENSION OF THE FROZEN AREA AND THE TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN A HYPOTHETICAL TISSUE SAMPLE WITH TEMPERATURES EQUAL TO 37 OC, 20 OC AND 0 OC. THE NUMERIC RESULT FOR THE INTERFACE SOLID-LIQUID LOCATION COMPARED WITH AN ANALYTICAL SOLUTION SHOWS GOOD AGREEMENT. OTHER RESULTS ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED CONSIDERING THAT THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES ARE TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT. THE NUMERICAL MODEL COMPARED TO ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS PRESENTS THE ADVANTAGES OF ALLOWING ALTERATIONS IN (I) THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS, (II) THERMOPHYSICAL TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE PROPERTIES, (III) SAMPLE DIMENSIONS AND (IV) COMPOSITION OF THE TISSUE. KEY-WORDS: PHASE CHANGE, SOLIDIFICATION, CRYOGENICS
