A STUDY OF THE DYNAMICS AND CONTROL OF FLOATING MULTIBODY SYSTEMS
 
Summary :
THE OFFLOADING OPERATION OF THE FPSO-TURRET AND FPSO-DICAS ARE TWO PARTICULAR CASES OF MULTIBODY SYSTEMS CONSISTING OF TWO VESSELS IN A TANDEM CONFIGURATION. A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMICS OF BOTH SYSTEMS UNDER ACTION OF WIND, WAVE AND CURRENT IS CARRIED OUT. FIRSTLY, THE EQUILIBRIUM POSITIONS ARE EVALUATED BY STATIC ANALYSIS AND THEN DYNAMIC ANALYSIS IS PERFORMED IN ORDER TO CHECK THE STABILITY OF THE SYSTEM. THE RESULTS HAVE SHOWN THAT IT IS QUITE IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE STABILITY OF THE EQUILIBRIUM POSITION EASILY SINCE IT DEPENDS ON THE RELATIVE ANGLE AND MAGNITUDE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS AND DISPLACEMENT OF SHIPS AS WELL. WHAT S MORE IN THE CASE OF THE FPSO-TURRET, THE POSITION OF THE TURRET ALONGSIDE THE SHIP AFFECTS THE STATIC AND DYNAMIC OF THE SYSTEM. WHEN THE EQUILIBRIUM IS UNSTABLE, THE DYNAMICS OF THE SYSTEM TENDS TO A LIMIT CYCLE. IN ORDER TO AVOID COLLISION OF THE VESSELS, SOME CONTROL ACTION OVER THE SHUTTLE TANKER IS SUGGESTED.
