DESENVOLVIMENTO E CARACTERIZAÇÃO DE ESPUMAS RÍGIDAS, COM POROS INTERCOMUNICANTES E SUA APLICAÇÃO COMO MEIOS FILTRANTES

Summary :
ABSTRACT . THIS STUDY DESCRIBES A METHOD TO PRODUCE RIGID FOAMS WITH CONNECTED PORES BY THE EMULSION POLYMERIZATION OF THE METHYLMETACRYLATE MONOMER, AND ITS TECHNOLOGICAL FEASIBILITY IN THE FILTERS MANUFACTURING. THE MAIN PROPERTIES OF THE FOAMS WERE SUCCESSFULY EVALUATED FOR THE CONTROL OF THE PERMEABILITY, THE POROSITY AND PORE SIZE. IT WAS SPECIALLY NOTED THE POSSIBILITY TO CONTROL BOTH: THE PORE SIZE BY THE RESIN PARTICULE SIZE DISTRIBUITION, AND THE POROSITY BY THE AMMOUNT OF MONOMER. BOTH OF THEM WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PERMEABILITY CONTROL. THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES WERE EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE FOAMS WITH DIFFERENT DENSITIES AND INTRINSICAL FEATURES OF RAW MATERIALS. COMPUTERISED TOMOGRAPHY WAS APPLIED AS A NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST TO IDENTIFY INTERNAL BUBBLES; EASY AND PROMPT INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE ACCORDINGLY. KEY WORDS: FILTERS, FOAMS, EMULSION POLYMERIZATION, ACRILIC RESINS, COMPUTERISED TOMOGRAPHY
