 Title:
STUDY OF THE TRANSIENT REGIMES OF COMPRESSIBLE FLOWS IN PIPELINES WITH AREA CHANGE

Summary :
SIMULATION OF THE FLOW FIELD OF COMPRESSIBLE LIQUID AND GAS THROUGH PIPELINES WITH VARIABLE AREA IS PRESENTED. THE DIFFERENTIAL MASS, LINEAR MOMENTUM AND ENERGY EQUATIONS WERE NUMERICALLY SOLVED BY TWO DIFFERENT FINITE DIFFERENCE NUMERICAL SCHEMES, FOR COMPRESSIBLE FLOW THROUGH PIPELINES. CONSERVATIVE AND NON-CONSERVATIVE SCHEMES WERE EMPLOYED. THE ALGORITHM WAS VALIDATED WITH AVAILABLE LITERATURE RESULTS. IT IS SHOWN THAT A PERFECT MASS BALANCE IS OBTAINED WITH THE CONSERVATIVE METHOD. THEREFORE, THIS METHOD IS MORE RELIABLE WHEN THE MASS BALANCE MUST BE OBTAINED WITHIN MACHINE ACCURACY, AS IS THE CASE FOR LEAK DETECTION SITUATIONS. ON THE HAND, SINCE THE NON-CONSERVATIVE METHOD PRESENTS A STRONGER COUPLING BETWEEN THE EQUATION OF STATE AND THE CONTINUITY EQUATION, THE ALGORITHM IS MORE STABLE.
