 Title:
THERMAL STRATIFICATION MODEL FOR WASTEWATER STABILIZATION PONDS

Summary :
ABSTRACT: THIS PAPER PRESENTS A MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO PREDICT THERMAL STRATIFICATION CONDITIONS IN STABILIZATION PONDS. THIS PHENOMENON IS OF PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE SINCE IF STRATIFICATION PREVAILS THE EFFECTIVE VOLUME OF THE LAGOON IS DIMINISHED. TO MODEL THE PROCESS THE STABILIZATION POND IS DIVIDED IN LAYERS. A MASS AND THERMAL BALANCE IN NON-STEADY CONDITIONS GIVES AN ESTIMATION OF THE VERTICAL THERMAL DISTRIBUTION AND THE POSITION OF THE TERMOCLINE. THE MATHEMATICAL RESULTS WERE COMPARED TO EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS AND IT WAS OBSERVED THAT FOR THE MODELED CASES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ESTIMATED AND THE OBSERVED TEMPERATURES WAS LESS THAN 15%. KEY WORDS: STABILIZATION PONS, THERMAL STRATIFICATION, MATHEMATICAL MODEL
