 Title:
DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH RESOLUTION LIQUID LEVEL SENSOR

Summary :
THE MEASUREMENT OF A LIQUID LEVEL OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS IN LARGE STORAGE TANKS IS IMPORTANT FOR PREVENTING LARGE MONEY LOSSES OR PROFIT DUE TO SMALL ERRORS IN THE MEASUREMENT. THE AVAILABLE INSTRUMENTS FOR THIS APPLICATION HAVE AN ESTIMATED UNCERTAINTY OF AT LEAST +/- 1 MM.ITS CALIBRATION REQUIRES A HIGHLY ACCURATE MEASUREMENT STANDARD. A LASER BEAM INSTRUMENT, BASED ON THE REFRACTION OF A HIGHLY COLLIMATED BEAM AT A LIQUID/LIQUID OR LIQUID/GAS INTERFACE WAS DEVELOPPED WITH A REPEATABILITY BETTER THAN +/- 0,1 MM. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE SYSTEM AND THE TESTS CONDUCTED FOR ITS QUALIFICATION. THE MEASURED INTERFACES WERE WATER/AIR, WATER/OIL AND AIR/OIL. ALSO, MEASUREMENTS AND COMPARISON WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF A CAPACITIVE TRANSDUCER WERE CARRIED ON, IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE LASER INSTRUMENT HAS A SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE AND CAN BE USED AS A MEASUREMENT STANDARD.
