 Title:
USE OF TIME-FREQUENCY TECHNIQUES IN INTERPRETATION OF SIGNALS IN ENGINEERING

Summary :
ABSTRACT. IN ANALYSIS OF STRUCTUAL RESPONSE USUALLY ARE USED TIME OR FREQUENCY DOMAIN TECHNIQUES. IN BOTH CASES, ONLY A PART OF ALL INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE SIGNAL IS APPARENT. IT IS PRESENTED AN ANALYSIS TOOL THAT ALLOWS THE VISUALIZATION OF RESPONSES IN BOTH DOMAINS SIMULTANEOUSLY, I.E., A TIME-FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION (TFD) OF ENERGY. THESE RESULTS ARE BIDIMENSIONAL FUNCTIONS THAT SHOW THE ENERGY DISTRIBUTION CONTAINED BY THE SIGNAL AS A FUNCTION OF TIME AND FREQUENCY. THIS WORK PRESENTS THE GENERAL THEORY OF TFDS, SHOWING SOME TYPES OF EXISTING DISTRIBUTIONS, THEIR PROPERTIES AND THE COMPUTATIONAL EFFORT ENVOLVED. SO PRESENTED IS THE METHODOLOGY FOR COMPUTATIONAL IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS TOOL, WITH ENPHASIS ON A FAST ALGORITHM DEVELOPED TO CALCULATE THE COHEN S CLASS OF TIME-FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS. IN ORDER TO SHOW THE APPLICABILITY OF THIS TOOL AND ITS EFFICIENCY, SOME SIMPLE SIGNALS COMMONLY APPEARING IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ARE ANALYSED. KEYWORDS: TIME-FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS, SPECTRAL ANALYSIS, SIGNALS.
