DEVELOPMENT OF A CERAMIC SPHERE GRINDING MACHINE FOR HIP PROSTHESES ABSTRACT: SEVERAL AREAS OF THE ENGINEERING ARE NOWADAYS DEPENDENT ON ADVANCED CERAMIC COMPONENTS SPECIALLY OBTAINED FROM POWDER FORMING, FOLLOWED BY SINTERING. UNDER THIS FOCUS, IT BECOMES RELEVANT THE INVESTIGATION TO ADD NEW INFORMATIONS TO THE CERAMIC FORMING AND MACHINING PROCESSES AIMING THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PRODUCTS IN SUCH MATERIALS. IN PARTICULAR, THE ORTHOPAEDIC PROSTHESES ENGINEERING AREA IT IS ONE OF THE MOST LACKING OF THAT ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY. SO, IT IS SOUGHT WITH PRESENT WORK, TO CONTRIBUTE FOR THE DECREASE OF SOME OF THE EXISTENT TECHNOLOGICAL LACKS, IN TERMS OF DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING, RELATED WITH THE PRODUCTION OF SPHERICAL CERAMIC COMPONENTS, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GRINDING MACHINE CONCEIVED FOR THAT END, INVOLVING THE DESIGN, THE CONSTRUCTION AND ITS PERFORMANCE IN MACHINING OPERATIONS TO GREEN, GRINDING, LAPPING AND POLISHING OF CERAMIC SPHERES. THE WORK PRESENTS THE STUDY FOR THE ECONOMIC DESIGN OF A GRINDING MACHINE FOR CERAMIC SPHERES OF UP TO 41.0 MM IN DIAMETER, FOR TOTAL HIP PROSTHESES, WHERE THE CONSTRUCTIVE ALTERNATIVES AND THE INVOLVED MATERIALS ARE PRESENTED.
